Web Design Certificate Overview
The Alliance Web Design Certificate Program consists of courses utilizing WordPress that will help participants develop level one web design skills. Participants of this program will learn how to create and publish posts and pages; customize their site with themes, widgets and custom menus; and extend WordPress even further with plugins and adjust the settings that keep their site safe and secure. Participants will learn how to get the most out of WordPress and create feature-rich blogs and websites. Following each module participants will be expected to participate in an online assessment. Each assessment will be scored on a Pass/No Pass basis. In addition, participants to earn an Alliance Certificate of Achievement, must complete their final project (finished website) to satisfactorily pass the course. Completion of homework, collaboration, and attendance of 90% is expected.

Hosting & Domain Registration

Participants will learn how to register a domain with a registrar and select a hosting company.

The elements of design are the building blocks of design. Understanding the basic elements you’ll be able to put together a more powerful Website.
- WordPress Intro
Participants will install WordPress, install theme and learn about the WordPress dashboard.
The Power of Plugins
Plugins is a term for a collection of additional pieces of software that provide extra functionality. Participants will learn how to utilize FREE plugins to make your website behave like you want.
Widgets are very handy little chunks of functionality that perform common task. Learn how to choose the right widgets you want to help improve functionality, performance and appearance. You, the webmaster, choose which widgets you want to use to perform additional task.
Adding Media to Your Website
- People love images; after all, “a picture speaks a thousand words”. Any images that you can add to your articles that help describe what you are talking about are always worth adding. WordPress has some very powerful and flexible ways of handling media on a website and in this lesson you will learn several ways of doing so.
- The basics of Photo Editing – learn some basics on how to edit and crop images using Gimp2, a free photo editing tool.
CSS / HTML / PHP / FTP
- HTML Basics
Although it’s not necessary to know HTML, CSS or PHP in order to build a powerful WordPress site, it can be handy to know how to insert HTML and do some basic edits of your CSS and PHP files to modify template theme. We will cover some very basics on editing HTML, CSS and PHP so that you’re familiar with the terms and know how to access the files.

SEO is a huge topic and is all about how to optimize your website to attract visitors. There is no point in having a stat-of-the-art website if no-one ever visits it.
- Best Practices
When creating content on your site, it is important to follow some basic good practices when writing and formatting your post and pages. Participants will learn basic sound SEO practices.
Backing Up & Restore
Participants will learn how to install and configure a FREE backup plugin.
Backing up is great but without the knowledge of restoring your website, your backup is useless. You will learn the skiulls necessary no only to back up but also restore.
